The Minister for Agriculture, Simon Coveney, is being urged to consider setting aside a 5 million euro share in a Galway Bay fish farm project for local fishermen to invest in.

Last month, plans for a deep-sea fish farming project off Inis Oírr were revealed, which could create up to 500 jobs.

Bord Iascaigh Mhara is due to lodge an application for a licence for the project with the Minister later this month.

Galway West Senator, Fidelma Healy-Eames says several Galway fishermen have indicated that they would be interested in investing in the project.
