Minister re-affirms commitment to complete motorway by 2010

TRANSPORT 21 – the Government’s multi-billion project to fund major improvements in our transport infrastructure – has cut up to 45 minutes from the journey time on the N6 Galway-Dublin road.
That’s 45 minutes for you to spend with your family; 45 extra minutes for you to close that business deal; or 45 precious minutes for you simply to do as you please. Moreover, that is 45 minutes less spent in frustrating tailbacks, traffic jams, or bottlenecks en route between the two cities.
This has come about as a result of July’s opening of the N6 Kilbeggan to Athlone dual carriageway that bypasses Kilbeggan, Horseleap and the traffic blackspot of Moate. For years drivers have had to endure immense frustration as they travelled through these towns. For them, for local residents, and for all others using the route, those days are no more.
The opening of this 29 kilometre stretch of road brings the completion of the entire Galway-Dublin interurban route a step closer. There is now more than 110 kilometres of uninterrupted motorway or dual carriageway on the route and the entire road is on course to be completed on time in 2010.
