Minister Coveney vows to assist Galway fishermen
Galway Bay fm newsroom – The Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries has vowed to do everything possible to help Galway fishermen who suffered damage to boats and equipment during the recent stormy weather.
Senator Trevor O’Clochartaigh raised the issue in the Seanad last evening, and called on the minister to provide an emergency fund to help with the repair and replacement of fishing equipment and infrastructure.
Speaking on behalf of Minister Simon Coveney, Junior Minister Tom Hayes said the government is acutely aware of the difficulties faced by the affected fishermen.
Minister Coveney has presented an assessment of the damage to vital pier and harbour infrastructure to the goverment, which is now awaiting individual damage assessments from councils nationwide.
The government will then decide on a fully-informed response to the damage caused by the storm in both coastal and inland areas.
Senator O’Clochartaigh says he is now calling on all fishermen who have been affected by storm damage to bring their case to the attention of the minister’s office.
Speaking in the Seanad, Junior Minister Hayes says any finanacial assistance given will be governed by EU guidelines.
