Date Published: 28-Sep-2012
Tuam can recover its economic prosperity if financing and debt levels are addressed through ongoing government initiatives.
That’s according to Minister Joan Burton who visited the town today where she officiated at the opening of the new North Galway MABS (Money Advice and Budgeting Service) office, on Barrack Street.
The North Galway division was established in 1995.
Statistics show that the division which includes Athenry, Ballygar, Headford, Dunmore, Claregalway and Milltown now has 383 active clients for 2012, a jump from 175 in 2006.
Minister Burton says the economic climate has seen an increase in demand for support and that returning to prosperity is now achieveable for Tuam and North Galway.
Speaking to Galway Bay fm news, she says the governement is focusing on getting support for people who now find themselves in very difficult financial circumstances.
The Minister also launched a new training resource for travellers which is run by the MABS office.
The service called "A Way of Life" is a money management resource to assist and support travellers in the Tuam area in managing their finances.
Martin Ward of the Western Traveller Intercultural Development Group in Tuam says it’s a welcome service.
