MILLTOWN completed their Group 4 senior football championship campaign unbeaten following this victory over a game St. Michael’s side which fielded without county player Eamonn Brannigan. The North Galway men were in control from the throw-in and led at half-time by five points, 1-10 to 0-8.

Milltown’s goal came in the 27th minute when Mark Hehir combined with Michael Martin to set up Sean Glynn who found the net superbly. This put Milltown 1-9 to 0-6 ahead.

Indeed, it was Martin and Hehir that were leading the Milltown attack and converting the scores. In the first half, Martin put four points on the board, including two frees, while Hehir, shooting from the left-hand side, also landed a brace of placed balls.. Eoin Mannion kicked two points from play while there was one point each from Damien Brennan and Liam Costelloe.

The city side had tried gamely to stay in touch with Eddie Hoare doing a lot of hard work in the opening quarter. Hoare scored four of St Michael’s first half tally, including a trio of excellent points from play. Greg Rogan pointed two frees while Eoin Day and Damien O’Brien were the other St Michael’s forwards on target in that opening half.

Milltown seemed to take the foot of the pedal on the resumption after Michael Martin pointed another free early in the half as over the next ten minutes St Michael’s battled back courtesy of two pointed Eddie Hoare frees and one from play from Plunkett Tormey, leaving only a goal between the sides, 1-11 to 0-11, after 41 minutes.

St Michael’s might have been level were it not for a great save by Conor Nolan in the Milltown goal after David Cunnane had cut through the opposition defence to lay a great pass on for Eoin Day.
