Milltown fall to defeat but do enough to save status
Salthill/Knocknacarra 2-14
Milltown 3-9
MILLTOWN fired the last 1-3 of this SFC tie to save themselves from relegation in a breathtaking and frantic climax to a game which mattered little to Salthill but meant everything to the Diarmuid Blake managed side.
Long-serving attackers Michael Martin and Mark Hehir were the heroes of the hour for Milltown, accounting for that total of 1-3, 1-1 and 0-2 respectively, which saw the north Galway side pip Killererin to the serenity of fourth spot in the group on scoring difference by just two-points.
The goal for the afternoon for Milltown would have been to go out and win the game outright. That was the attitude they needed to have and it was the one they took as they went goal hunting in the second half when trailing Anthony Finnerty’s side by, at times, as little as four-points.
Subsequently, news began to filter through to Tuam Stadium that St Michael’s were dishing out a trimming to Killererin, meaning both sides, with a loss, would finish up on three-points in the group having drawn with one another on the opening weekend’s action. Therefore, scoring difference would determine who would join Bearna in the bottom two and face a relegation battle.
Killererin were nine-points better off than Milltown in that regard at the beginning of the day, so as the live scores from Kenny Park filtered through, each score started to become more and more invaluable as Milltown chased down Salthill/Knocknacarra.
Bearna then threw a major spanner in the works in Moycullen, recovering from 0-8 to 0-2 down, to go ahead of An Spidéal by the narrowest of margins inside the game’s final five minutes.
