Military museum finally gets a home

THE new Military Museum at Dún Uí Mhaoilíosa, Renmore, officially opened the doors of its new home within the confines of the barracks last Tuesday.

The museum was first opened in 1985, but had been without a permanent home since renovations began within the complex towards the end of last year. It had previously been revamped in 1999 to coincide with the 75th anniversary of An Chéad Chath but is now situated in a new, purpose built building at the military barracks.

The museum commemorates soldiers who served at the historical barracks since its establishment in 1880 and houses many interesting and unique items. The barracks was originally the depot of the Connaught Rangers and uniforms, weapons and a regimental drum are included in displays from that time.
