Mikel Murfi truckin’ along in new show

The new Gate Truck will visit Galway City on Tuesday, July 27, with MiddleTown, a show created and performed by Mikel Murfi.

This world premiere, which was commissioned by the Gate Theatre last year, tells the story of a quiet man, in the middle of his life, in the middle of a small town. He’s a furniture removals man, with a fine truck. One day, he does something unusual.

He packs his ‘life’ (and his bees) into the truck, pulls the door behind him, and doesn’t look back as the vehicle becomes his world, bringing him to places he never imagined he’d see.

The brief which Mikel Murfi was given by the Gate for this commission was to create an original show that could be performed within ongoing restrictions.

He’s a master in the area of one-person shows, having previously written and performed The Man in the Woman’s Shoes and I Hear You and Rejoice.

He describes MiddleTown as a timely and gentle reflection of ‘living in the middle’ and the ongoing search for solitude, simplicity, and real happiness.

Mikel is delighted to be visiting Galway with this show.

“I’ve such a fondness for the place,” he says. “I’ve worked with Macnas and Druid and others down the years and have played the Town Hall on numerous occasions with my one-man shows, so I’m looking forward to it.”

The Gate Truck is a large vehicle, supported by DAF Trucks Ireland, which has been adapted to allow this full-scale production to be staged and stored on its flatbed as it tours the country from July 22 to August 12.
