Mighty Saoirse is back at school
The nine-year-old Galway girl who has been in the thoughts of the nation as she battles with childhood cancer has returned to school – just weeks after major surgery at Crumlin Children’s Hospital.
Saoírse Ruane from Kiltullagh underwent surgery almost a month ago, just days after she performed on RTÉ’s Late Late Show, to treat a tumour that had been found on her lung.
At the weekend, Saoírse’s mum Roseanna announced in a statement on social media that the family had received some welcome news.
“Following a call from our oncologist, we learned that Saoírse’s surgery was successful and no further treatment is required, which is the best outcome we could have hoped for,” wrote Roseanna, as she thanked people for the support given to them both, to Saoírse’s dad, Ollie, and little sister Farrah-Rose.
“As many of you will know, cancer is incredibly unpredictable so the plan now is to go forward cautiously, from review to review, as our team wish to monitor Saoírse carefully.
She said they were indebted to the team at Crumlin who had looked after them, and to those who helped them through what had been a difficult time for the family.
“We firmly believe that the constant flow of prayers, relics, candles and masses offered for Saoírse is what helped her through this major surgery and reconstruction,” she said.
