Mícheál returns with An Rithim Réidh
Connemara melodeon player, Mícheál Darby Ó Fátharta, is back on the music scene following a 17-year absence and has just released his new album, An Rithim Réidh. The title, roughly translates as ‘the steady rhythm’, which describes Mícheál’s, distinctive melodeon playing: a mellow, easy-going style that demonstrates his deep respect for and understanding of instrument.
An Rithim Réidh has received regular airplay on RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta and on Ireland’s regional radio stations since it was released three weeks ago and the compilation of reels, jigs and a selection of waltzes, barn dances, hornpipes and a slow air is also going down well with Galway music fans.
The album’s attractive cover gives the melodeon pride of place, together with a cheeky seagull. Mícheál collaborated with Galway artist Dara McGee to create an image that gives a sense of place while showing deference to an instrument that has long been associated with Mícheál’s native Cois Fharraige.
Musician Róisín Nic Dhonncha will launch An Rithim Réidh in Tigh Chualáin, Indreabhán, at 8pm this Saturday, March 11, and all are welcome. Mícheál will perform a selection from the album and will be joined by guest musicians, singers and dancers including Ceoltóirí Óga Chois Fharraige, Mary Shannon and Mary Staunton.
