Galway County Council is being called on to open a relief road to facilitate local people in the townland of Tierneevan near Gort, who are marooned as a result of flooding.

County Councillor Michael Fahy says the flooding around Tierneevan has been so bad in recent weeks the road to Gort has been closed.

Locals and school-children have had to detour miles to travel to the local town.

There’s a relief road available but the landowner cannot open it until insurance issues are sorted with the county council.

Councillor Fahy says the flooding has got worse with this week’s heavy rain and he’s appealing to the council to open the relief road

Meanwhile Councillor Fahy is not happy with the Office of Public Works allocation of just 7,000 euro for maintenance works on the Dunkellin River.

Councillor Fahy says a solution must be found to allow the water to be able to reach the sea.
