Galway’s Michael D Higgins is to be declared the president elect later today.

Counting resumed in the last hour [9am] at Dublin castle after it was suspended overnight as the second count failed to deliver a result.

From tomorrow, the Labour candidate will have to put plans in place for his new role as Ireland’s ninth president.

He will be inaugurated at a state ceremony in Dublin Castle on November 11th.

Counting on the two constitutional referendum will also take place today in the Galway West and East count centres, and nationwide.

One to cut judges pay is expected to pass comfortably, but the 30th Amendment to give Oireachtas Committees more powers of investigation, cound be more difficult.
