Long serving Galway West Labour TD Michael D Higgins has announced that he will not be contesting the next general election in Galway

Political pundits feel there will be a general election in the Spring so it appears Deputy Higgins has decided to concentrate on the 2011 presidential election although he has not yet secured the nomination
