Metabolic testing is the latest weapon for health

Many of us blame our metabolism – yours truly included – for those creeping pounds, especially as we get older.  What we could get away with in our 20s in terms of poor diet, lots of booze and skipping exercise becomes trickier in our 30s, much harder in our 40s and damn near impossible in our 50s.

But what if there was a way to actually scientifically measure what our metabolism is? And tailor your diet and exercise accordingly?

Metabolism is defined as the chemical processes that occur within a living organism in order to maintain life.

Measuring our metabolic rate has been an online fad for quite some time, with some websites claiming to accurately measure it according to weight and height.

But how can you measure something as personal as metabolism over the net?

Now a fitness and lifestyle coach from Oranmore has brought metabolic testing to the west of Ireland for the first time, claiming to offer the most accurate way of measuring how we use our energy.

Oisin O’Malley has two ways of doing this – measuring our resting metabolic rate and doing a VO2 test, or analysing our aerobic capacity.

The resting metabolic rate measures the amount of energy or calories your body requires to function at rest. So, if you were lying in bed all day and did not move, this would be the amount of calories your body would need to have your organs functioning at their best.

“If you have ever been given calorie recommendations by somebody, it’s always just an estimation until you get one of these tests done,” explains Oisin.
