Met Live at the Eye with ‘La Traviata’

Verdi’s classic opera La Traviata will be screened live at the city’s Eye Cinema this Saturday, April 14 at 6pm. The live transmission comes direct from the stage of the Metropolitan Opera in New York, and is the last in the current season of The Met: Live in HD.

La Traviata tells the story of a scandalous, doomed love affair between the ailing courtesan Violetta and the young nobleman, Alfredo Germont. Its memorable music includes such well known arias as Ah, fors’è lui and the virtuosic Addio del Passato, sung from Violetta’s death bed.

This imaginative Metropolitan Opera production, directed by Willy Decker, floods the vast stage in blocks of colour and light, creating a stunning cinematic vista.

French soprano Natalie Dessay sings Violetta, surrounded by a stellar cast. American tenor Matthew Polenzani sings Alfredo, and the great Russian baritone Dmitri Hvorostovsky sings Germont. La Traviata is conducted by Fabio Luisi.
