(After extra time)

All season Mervue United have played gooseberry to the big two of Salthill Devon and Athenry as they vied for Premier Division and Connacht Junior Cup honours, with Devon eventually capturing both.

Finishing third in the league and certainly not far behind in terms of ability and commitment, United got their reward at the excellent Caufield Park 4G Grounds in Maree on Tuesday night with a come-from-behind win in the Michael Byrne Cup final.

Time and space were at a premium in a well-contested affair, and while Devon set the early standard, the longer the game went on, the more Mervue got into it and their early second-half equaliser changed the course of the game. From that moment on they appeared to grow in confidence as they put it up to the form team in every sense of the word.

Charlie Concannon supplied the match winner in extra-time in one of the few chances the striker got all night, and the Fahy’s Field side then closed out the game with a greater degree of comfort than would be anticipated.

Maybe it was because Salthill Devon are more used to the all-weather surface than Mervue, but they certainly started the game the better as Timmy Molloy and Matthew Murray rotated the ball left and right down the flanks, while the link up and holding play of Vinny Faherty brought everyone else into the game.
