Mervue United capture SFAI U-13 Cup
Corinthian Boys 1
Mervue United 4
Mervue United schoolboys kept the club in the national profile with a second SFAI Cup success of the season as the U-13 side added to the title won earlier in the campaign by the U-17 team.
The win at Turner’s Cross in Cork on Saturday was pretty emphatic as they dominated their Cork opponents for the duration and some splendid finishing was a perfect reward for their performance.
They were in go-forward mode from the early exchanges and almost made an early breakthrough when Kyle Fitzgerald chipped an effort over the advancing goalkeeper James O’Flaherty only for central defender Daniel Mellerick to sweep it off the line.
The custodian also came to the home side’s rescue when pushing away a Sean Flynn effort soon after and, despite the visitors’ control of affairs the game, was still scoreless at the break.
However, Mervue United finally made the pressure tell when Dawit Dems and Eoin Hannon provided the assist for Fitzgerald to fire a low effort in off the far post for the opener in the second-half.
With Dawit Dems, Rhys O’Connor and Aironas Kankantus giving them plenty of control and momentum from midfield, the back four were mainly unchallenged as the chances continued to fall for the visitors.
