Mervue United blazing a trail at the top of Premier Division

AFTER just two weeks of the new season, Mervue United are setting the pace in the Premier Division as they made it three wins in succession to go clear at the top of the table.

On Sunday in Bohermore, they emerged 3-0 away winners over Hibernians and they did the majority of their best work in the opening half with two goals. Enda Curran tapped home a Barry Moran cross for the early opener, before the former Galway United striker added a second from the penalty spot. Moran sealed the win with a last minute free kick that went over the defensive wall and past the despairing dive of Cian Costello.

Hibernians enjoyed plenty of possession, but the young side just do not have players with the finishing quality of Moran and Curran and a number of opportunities were spurned. Smart saves by Peter Healy denied Niall Rooney and Daniel Corbett, while a tip over also kept out a Shane Walsh cross shot. Walsh also did his defensive duties well and a goal line clearance denied Curran his hat trick in the latter stages.

Last season Salthill Devon started the campaign poorly, but they have made it two wins from three outings with a 3-1 away success over Maree/Oranmore. The home side led at the break courtesy of a Greaney goal, but the comeback was kick-started when Mikey Gallagher slotted home at close range to level matters, before efforts by Kevin Monagh and Tommy McKeown eventually sealed the win.

There was no joy for either of the newly promoted sides as Merlin Woods/Medtronic went down by 5-2 away against Corrib Celtic, while Bohemians had just a Dave Cubbard penalty to show for their efforts in a 4-1 defeat against Loughrea.

The previous week, goals in each half by Enda Curran and Barry Moran helped Mervue United to a 2-0 over Merlin Woods/Medtronic, while West United made it two wins from two starts with a 3-1 away success over Salthill Devon in Drom.

Scoreless at the break, Ronan Caldwell, Conor Murphy and Oisin Connolly were all on the mark for the visitors, while just Shane O’Rourke could find the range for a home side, who also missed a penalty when Mikey Fox’s effort was saved.

Bohemians picked up their first win of the season as a Dave Cubbard strike gave them a 1-0 win over Hibernians in Millar’s Lane, while Loughrea and Maree/Oranmore shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw.
