Mervue United and Salthill Devon to meet in Cup final
Soccer Wrap with Mike Rafferty
Salthill Devon and Mervue United will contest the Michael Byrne Cup final after they registered semi-final wins over Maree/Oranmore and Athenry on Wednesday evening.
The decider is scheduled for the 4g facility at Caulfield Park in Maree on Tuesday next at 7.15pm, and the game will bring the curtain down on the local soccer season.
Both clubs have won the Cup in recent years, but for Devon a win on this occasion would complete a wonderful season with a hat-trick of trophies, with them already having won the Connacht Junior Cup and Premier Division title.
The sides have met twice in league action earlier in the campaign, with Devon winning by 3-1 in the very first game of the league, while the sides shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw last December in their second meeting.
It will be the second major final in a week contested by Mervue United, as they take on Maree/Oranmore in Drom tonight (7pm) in the U-18 Premier Cup final.
Salthill Devon 2
Maree/Oranmore 1
Depending on which side of the fence you sat on, this meeting in Drom was a well-contested affair, where the visitors played well and made a real contest of it, while on the other hand the home side were missing four players from what would be considered their regular starting XI.
Sure, Devon were the better outfit for the duration, but they had to work really hard for their win against a young side with many of them having played for the Maree/Oranmore side that won the U-21 League a few months ago.
