Mervue’s goal rush not enough

MERVUE United did what was required of them in Bohermore last night, but it was too little too late as Athenry’s win in Drom saw them pip the city side to the league title on the final night of the season.

Hibs were first to settle as Mervue showed some early signs of nerves, and Brian Crowe and Eoin Roche had early sights of goal but their efforts never really threatened ‘keeper Eoin Martin.

Mervue finally found their feet about 15 minutes into the game and came agonisingly close to taking the lead through Simon Murray, but
Derek Lally was on hand to hack clear off the line.

Mike Tierney wasted a good chance for Hibs in the 22nd minute when firing into the side netting after doing the hard work in getting past Derek Heffernan, but Ger McGrath was equally wasteful at the other end when he could only direct a free header across goal and wide.
