Mervue hoping to break their Wexford duck
Date Published: 31-Mar-2011
Mervue United travel to Ferrycarrig Park for an 8pm kick-off this evening (Friday), hoping to end a run that has never seen them win against Wexford Youths. Indeed, last season alone, Mervue lost 0-1 and 2-5 to this evening’s opposition at home, while they also suffered a 3-2 loss away.
Time will tell if United can buck the trend this evening, although manager Johnny Glynn does have injury concerns. Defender Martin Conneely is extremely doubtful due to a head injury, which required six stitches, while David O’Brien (ankle) and John Mountney (knee) are also doubtful. Dan Cunningham is still out for another week. Damien O’Rourke is unavailable due to work commitments.
While gutsy Mervue lost 2-1 to promotion chasers Shelbourne at home last weekend, they did secure a superb victory over Finn Harps, after extra-time, in their EA Sports Cup clash on Monday evening. Rory Gaffney scored the all-important goal in the 1-0 win.
Glynn says he was delighted with the performance. “Yeah, I was encouraged with the performance; it was just a pity it wasn’t a league match,” he quipped.
They will get their chance in the League in Ferrycarrig Park this evening, however, and although Mervue have not beaten Wexford Youths in the Airtricity League to date, they should be harbouring genuine ambitions of picking up points against the basement club.
