Galway Bay fm newsroom – Galway City Council is to consider a public call for improved lighting in the Merlin area and its surrounding estates in a bid to combat ongoing anti-social behaviour.

It follows a public meeting last evening attended by over 30 people including a number of local councillors.

The gathering was faciliated by the city council housing estate liaison officer to discuss estate security and a rise in vandalism.

The meeting heard that local residents are living in fear due to anti-social behaviour in Merlin Woods and the use of nearby neighbourhoods as a thoroughfare.

A residents group is now to be formed as well as a neighbourhood watch texting service.

A meeting will also be arranged with Gardai to discuss the rise in criminal damage and a call for greater local patrols.

Housing Estate Liaison Officer Therese Carroll says the provision of additional lighting will now be costed with a view to considering CCTV as a longer term plan.
