Merits and demerits of fat tax explored at NUIG conference on obesity
Galway Bay fm newsroom – Tackling obesity should be one of the top public health priorities in Ireland.
That’s according to Professor John Cawley of Cornell University who was one of the key speakers addressing an expert conference on obesity at NUIG today.
Professor Cawley says there is a 23 percent prevalence of obesity in Ireland today – significantly lower than the US at 36 percent.
However he says behaviour change is only possible if economic policy is introduced which makes it easier to make key lifestyle changes involving diet and physical activity levels.
The merits and demerits of a ‘fat tax’ and how it has fared in other countries were also debated in detail today.
