MEPS CALL FOR LEGISLATIVE ACTION FOLLOWING DEATH OF SAVITA HALAPPANAVAR

MEPs have joined calls for immediate action to be taken to legislate for medical terminations.

In a letter to an Taoiseach Enda Kenny today, 53 MEPs from 15 different countries and four different political groups have made the representation following the death of Savita Halappanavar at UHG last month.

The letter was initiated by MEP Paul Murphy and MEP Mikael Gustafsson, Chair of the Women’s Rights and Equality Committee.

It comes ahead of an International Day of Protest next Wednesday [21 November], with demonstrations at Irish embassies around the world.

The 31 year old dentist had been living in the city and died on the 28th of October after contracting septicaemia following a miscarriage at University Hospital Galway.

Her husband, 34 year old Praveen, an engineer at Boston Scientific, claims she was repeatedly refused a medical termination.
