They came in their droves to remember and celebrate their loved ones who were gone – and in the process more than a thousand walkers will have raised the funds that will make life’s latter days that much easier for so many others.
Sunday may only have marked the second year of the Galway Hospice Memorial Walk but already it is firmly established as one of the special events on the Galway calendar that lifts the soul.
Like all of the best ideas it is a simple one – you walk from the Claddagh to the far end of Salthill Promenade and back to remember someone you have lost.
Most were lost to cancer and many had availed of the wonderful service from the Galway Hospice towards the
end of their lives.
Their names were carried proudly on the fronts of the walkers’ tee-shirts. Some were well known in life – including two former Mayors of Galway Michael Leahy and Bridie O’Flaherty – and others were
simply described as Grandma.
