Mellows & Castlegar to meet South Galway rivals

CITY clubs Liam Mellows and Castlegar are set to play Ardrahan and Kinvara respectively in the county senior hurling championship preliminary quarter-finals following the final round of group games at the weekend.

Mellows’ five point defeat to 2007 county finalists Kinvara at Pearse Stadium has left the city club in third place in Group C, with two wins and a draw from four games, to set up a tough meeting with an Ardrahan side who registered an impressive 1-19 to 0-9 win over a relegation threatened Killimordaly side on Saturday evening.

There is still one outstanding game to be played in the group stages of the championship, a postponed meeting between neighbours Carnmore and Castlegar, but the outcome of that tie will have no bearing on Cashel’s third place finish in Group D.

However, bottom side Carnmore still have it all to play for, as any kind of win over their neighbours in this final fixture would condemn Killimordaly – who have an inferior points difference – to bottom place and the relegation play-offs.

Castlegar will meet Kinvara irrespective of the outcome of that outstanding fixture.

Elsewhere, All-Ireland champions Portumna remained on course for a third consecutive county title when they accounted for Turloughmore by 1-13 to 0-10, without ever reaching full throttle, at sunswept Loughrea on Saturday evening.
