Meeting to hear residents’ concerns over roadway at building site

Despairing residents living beside a new housing development in Barna are to meet on Monday next to discuss ongoing health and safety concerns.

This comes as the County Council confirmed it recently carried out an inspection of the An Maolán development at Truskey West following several complaints from nearby homeowners.

Construction work at An Maolán began in 2019 but following delays due to Covid-19 and changes in developers, the “luxurious collection of four-bedroom homes” is still under construction.

Planning for the 48-unit development, located in an area known locally as ‘Paint Box Road’, was granted by An Bord Pleanála in 2018 to Drumque Ltd. It has since been taken over by Edward where well-known developer Gerry Barrett is Managing Director.

Local resident Aidan Brady is one of those organising Monday evening’s meeting and he told the Connacht Tribune that for the most part, residents on the road were initially delighted with news of the development – particularly as they anticipated an upgrade to their narrow road.

However, after three years of construction work, no such upgrade has materialised and conditions have worsened due to heavy vehicles accessing the site, he said.

In addition, Mr Brady said the road had been made narrower by fencing around the site which was causing an obstruction.

A spokesperson for Galway County Council confirmed that the local authority had been made aware of local residents’ concerns and the developer has been contacted.
