CITY TRIBUNE
Meeting of the top two to attract crowd of over 6,000
Galway United manager John Caulfield is calling on his players to thrive in the hostile atmosphere they are likely to encounter in Turners Cross on Friday night when they take on Cork City in a top-of-the-table clash that is predicted to be played in front of a crowd in excess of 6,000 people.
There is talk of the game edging close to a 7,000 sell-out, but the away section will come nowhere near being fully populated – United have never enjoyed significant away support in the 40-plus years of playing in the league.
That lack of significant away fans will make for an even more intimidating experience for a visiting side that goes into the game one point behind their hosts, having played a game more, but Caulfield hopes his players can tap into that hostility and turn it in their own favour.
“As a footballer, these are the kind of games you should want to be playing in, a packed ground, a big atmosphere, the two top teams in the table going head-to-head.
“The atmosphere will be heated and intimidating, but we have to go and show what we are capable of, we have to thrive in that environment, and we do not have anything to fear from City.
“We were arguably the better side in the first game of the season down there up until Wilson [Waqweru] was sent off, and we continued to work hard after that and got the goal and the win. I think we were the better side as well in Eamonn Deacy Park, but just couldn’t find the goal and they got the win, so there really has been nothing between the sides this season.
