Meehan bails Galway out of trouble

THE onset of Easter always seems to herald in the GAA world a primal sense that the summer season of business action is within scenting distance and last Sunday at Maghera, Galway experienced a taste of championship style fury against league champions, Derry.

By the time Liam Sammon’s charges packed their bags in the dressingroom of the compact
Watty Graham Park, their unbeaten record in Division One of the league had survived, but only just, as Derry frittered away late chances to take both points.

This was high intensity action with the speed of ball movement from both sides quite striking, as fortunes ebbed quite dramatically over the course of the 70 minutes.

Make no mistake about it but Derry are knocking on the door of being genuine All-Ireland contenders and they are still wounding from not following on from last year’s league final success over Kerry with a decent championship run.
