In Greek mythology Medusa had writhing snakes entwining her head in place of hair.  Her face was so hideous and her gaze so piercing that the mere sight of her was sufficient to turn a man to stone. She was said to have a great boar-like tusk and tongue lolling between her fanged teeth.

But it wasn’t always so.

One of the three Gorgons, daughters of the sea gods Phorcys and Ceto, her siblings were monsters by birth.

The only mortal in the family, she along was born with a beautiful face. The Roman poet Ovid praised the glory of her hair, “most wonderful of all her charms.”

That alas was to be her downfall. The sea god Poseidon was also taken with her and seduced her in the temple of Athena, who became so enraged by the act that she turned her hair into a coil of serpents and transformed her once beautiful features into monstrous hideousness.

Little wonder then that students at Scoil Bhríde Secondary School – better known as the Mercy Tuam – took a rather long time to decide who would model their creation for Junk Kouture inspired by this fearsome character.

Eventually it was Beibhinn Gleeson who stepped up to the mark for the photo shoot, which took place last April for the nationwide competition which encourages students to come up with a fashion creation made with recycled materials.

“Medusa is one of those things you know of – you’ve seen pictures of her. We thought she was so elegant and fierce, a real role model,” remarks team member Nia Nylon.
