A man was taken to hospital after the Shannon based Coastguard responded to a call from a Dutch trawler off the west coast of Galway overnight.

The Annelies Ilena fishing vessel was located 55 miles west of Slyne Head just after 2am, when the alarm was raised.

One of the crewman, a 43 year old Ukranian national, was taken to the Shannon Coastguard base where he was transferred to Limerick Hospital.

Meanwhile the Galway Mountain Rescue Team launched a search operation last evening for a man who was seen parking his car at the base of a Connemara mountain.

The team conducted a search from Knockpasheemore Mountain where he was reported to have started his ascent, to Ben Bán mountain.

The search was stood down at 4am.
