Med-tech giants tempt ex-pats home – by flying them for free

The new wave of ‘generation emigration’, who left Galway in search of work during the recent recession, are being lured back home from Australia by a multinational company with the promise of secure jobs.

And Boston Scientific is so desperate to hire skilled workers living Down Under, it will cover the relocation costs of candidates who successfully apply for jobs in the medical device company.

Continued growth in the Irish economy coupled with a shortage of skilled workers in Ireland, has prompted the Medtech giant to headhunt engineering talent in Australia.

As well as offering permanent positions, the company will pay for the relocation costs of successful applicants. It is looking for senior quality engineers and manufacturing engineers, as well as people to fill R&D (research and development) and other roles.

Boston Scientific has a workforce of almost 3,000 already employed at its facility in Ballybrit. Acquiring more skilled engineers and technical talent in Galway is central to the company’s plans to consolidate and expand its operations here.

It is currently trying to fill about 50 positions at its three Irish bases; the majority are in Galway with a handful in Cork and Clonmel.

Boston Scientific is primarily targeting Irish ex-pats who left in the recession but is also recruiting Europeans living in Australia, who want to come back to this side of the World; and Australians, who want to live here.
