Mayor wants horses banned from city estates
Galway Bay fm newsroom – Bye-laws should be introduced banning horses in all residential estates in the city.
That’s according to Mayor of Galway, Terry O’ Flaherty.
In one of her last acts in the role of mayor, Councillor O’ Flaherty says the ‘scourge of wandering horses’ needs to be addressed once and for all by the Council.
The call comes as the Irish Independent reports that 154 horses have been seized by the City Council since 2008, at a cost of 96 thousand euro.
In the county, 318 horses were seized by the Council since 2008 at a cost of 38 thousand euro, of which 107 were euthanised.
Speaking to Galway Bay fm News, Mayor O’ Flaherty says it’s cruelty to the horses and dangerous for the public.
Meanwhile, six thousand abandoned horses nationally have reportedly been put down over the past five years.
80 percent of those have been since 2011.
The ‘euthenising’ of stray horses by local authorities is believed to have cost the tax payer 12-and-a-half million euro.
Gillian Bird from the DSPCA says action urgently needs to be taken.
