MAYOR TO MARK HISTORIC HANDOVER OF EYRE SQUARE
Date Published: 14-Sep-2012
City Mayor Terry O’Flaherty is to mark the historic handover of Eyre Square to the people of Galway, at a special commemoration ceremony tomorrow [Sat Sept 15].
Eyre Square was handed over to Galway Corporation in 1712 by then Mayor Edward Eyre, the son of a Cromwellian officer who had settled in the city.
In 300 years, it has served as the Mayor’s Garden, and army parade ground and Meyrick Square before becoming Eyre Square in the 1820s.
Mayor Terry O’Flaherty will mark the anniversary by the unveiling of a commemorative plaque and the planting of a tree at noon tomorrow.
It’ll be followed by music and entertainment by ‘Sean agus Nua’ at 1 O’Clock.
Speaking to Galway Bay fm news, Mayor O’Flaherty invites the public to share in the occasion where she’ll also receive the ceremonial key to Eyre Square.
