MAYOR OF COUNTY IN FAVOUR OF MERGING CITY AND COUNTY COUNCILS

Mayor of County Galway Thomas Welby says there would be a real benefit to merging Galway city and county councils.

It’s being mooted the two could merge as part of local Government reforms that will be officially announced next week. (Tuesday)

It’s understood most if not all of the 75 town councils across the country will be scrapped at local elections.

That could mean the loss of the three town councils of Tuam, Ballinasloe and Loughrea.
