Mayor hits out at removal of festival signage in Salthill
Galway Bay fm newsroom – Mayor of Galway Padraig Conneely has hit out at city officials for removing recently erected festival flags from the Salthill area.
The signs were erected for the finals of the Aerlingus International Hurling Festival which takes place at Pearse Stadium on Saturday September 21st.
The tournament will feature 16 International teams competing in four groups of four, with the eventual winners crowned on the 21st.
A spokesperson for the City Council says the banners and signs were removed by the Roads Department because they were a significant danger to the public and to road users.
A statement adds that the signs were erected without any contact with, or permission from Galway City Council.
Groups seeking permission are required to submit written proposals to the Council at least 10 days in advance.
However Mayor Padraig Conneely told Galway Talks their removal was ‘heavy-handed’ and negotiation could have resolved the issue.
