Mayor brands Salthill as “very tatty”

Salthill has been branded “very tatty” by the Mayor of Galway.

Fine Gael councillor Pearce Flannery made the comment this week during a meeting of the local authority.

At a meeting on Monday morning, Cllr Donal Lyons (Ind) raised the matter of illegal signage on public roads, and specifically Salthill Promenade, which he said was “littered with advertising hoardings” on vans and trailers.

He said some of them were there for years, and there was little or no action on removing the vans.

Cllr Lyons said that last weekend, the area was “thronged” with advertising vehicles from Grattan Road to the far end of the Prom.

The Mayor described the situation as “crazy”, and every business in Galway seemed to think they had an opportunity to park there.

He also raised the matter of overnight parking of lorries on Rockbarton Road.

“It’s gone very, tatty because of it. It destroys the scenic and visual amenity of the area. Bylaws exist, we must remove these vehicles,” said the Mayor.

Chief Executive Brendan McGrath said that legislation is “not as clear as it might be”.

“Planning code allows it. I find it hugely frustrating, and overnight parking of ‘learner’ vehicles is utterly frustrating.

“Once signs are safely parked, they’re generally exempt from planning codes – you’ll notice that some are a very particular size.”
