Masterplans for ‘overhaul’ of city

Regeneration masterplans are to be drawn up for the city’s Inner Harbour and Sandy Road areas – both of which have been earmarked as areas of strategic development for residential, recreational and commercial use.

Sandy Road, which is in the majority ownership of Galway City and County Councils, has been identified as a prime location for the development of residential, industrial and commercial space, just a short distance from the city centre, while the Inner Harbour (effectively the existing Galway Docks area) is earmarked for residential, recreational, commercial and retail use.

Chief Executive of Galway City Council, Brendan McGrath, said the idea behind the masterplans – which will cost around €1 million in total to draw up – would be to establish the future use of the area and present it to councillors for their consideration by the end of this year.
