Martin Sheen for Film Fleadh public interview

Award-winning actor Martin Sheen will be the subject of this year’s Galway Film Fleadh Public Interview, which will take place on Sunday, July 10.
The Fleadh runs from July 5-10 and it will also host the world premiere of Stella Days which is set in rural Ireland and stars Martin Sheen, Stephen Rea and Amy Huberman. The film will screen in the Town Hall Theatre on Saturday July 9.
A multiple Emmy and Golden Globe Award winner, Martin Sheen is one of America’s most celebrated, colourful, and accomplished actors.
On the big screen, he has appeared in more than 65 feature films including Apocalypse Now, Wall Street, Gandhi, Catch Me If You Can, The Departed, Bobby and The Subject Was Roses.
He has won six Golden Globes and has six Emmy nominations for his role as President Bartlet in the hit TV series The West Wing. He has also played leading roles on series such as Murphy Brown, Two and Half Men and Kennedy where he played the role of President John F Kennedy.
The 23rd Galway Film Fleadh will open on July 5 with the Irish premiere screening of Parked, directed by Darragh Byrne which stars Colm Meaney, Colin Morgan and Stuart Graham. The film tells the story of lonesome Fred whose life changes when he forms an unlikely friendship with Cathal, a dope-smoking 21-year-old with a positive attitude to life.
Over its five days Fleadh will host international features, documentaries, new Irish shorts and world premieres of Irish feature films, including Lotus Eaters, directed by Alexandra McGuiness.
In association with Screen Training Ireland, David Mackenzie will be the subject of the Director’s Masterclass. David has directed amongst others The Last Great Wilderness, Young Adam, Asylum, Perfect Sense and You Instead.
In association with IFTA, Gill Denis will be the Galway Film Fleadh Screenwriter in Residence for 2011 and will give a special Masterclass during the Festival.
His work covers all genres from the multi-award-winning story of Johnny Cash in Walk the Line to the cult classic Return to Oz. Gill’s talent has drawn the attention of some of Hollywood’s finest, such as Francis Ford Coppola, Sam Peckinpah, James Mangold, Caleb Deschanel and Ed Harris, and he has been asked to work on scripts as diverse as Apocalypse Now, Pollock and The Black Stallion.
The 23rd Galway Film Fleadh programme will be launched in the Radisson Hotel on June 21 and details will be available afterwards at www.galwayfilmfleadh.com.

Galway has country’s largest population of young people

Galway has a population of young people which is more than twice the national average.
According to information gathered by the Central Statistics Office, Galway’s population of 20 to 24 year olds is more than twice the national average.
The number of 25-34 year olds in Galway is also more than the norm nationally, with the two main colleges thought to be the main reason.
However immigration in Galway is much higher than in other areas at 19.4 percent, compared to the national average of 12 percent.

Call for direct donations to city charity shops

A city councillor is encouraging people to donate goods directly to charity shops.
It follows allegations of thefts from clothes banks in Galway and across the country in recent months.
However, cameras are in place at some clothes banks and surveillance is carried out by local authorities.
Speaking on Galway Talks, Councillor Neil McNeilis said the problem of theft from clothes banks is widespread.

Galway ‘Park and Ride’ could become permanent

A park ‘n’ ride scheme from Carnmore into Galway city could become a permanent service if there is public demand.
That’s according to the Chief Executive of Galway Chamber of Commerce, Michael Coyle.
The pilot scheme will begin at 7.20 next Monday morning, May 13th.
Motorists will be able to park cars at the airport carpark in Carnmore and avail of a bus transfer to Forster Street in the city.
Buses will depart every 20 minutes at peak times and every 30 minutes at offpeak times throughout the day, at a cost of 2 euro per journey.
