Marking a century of the Tribune

THIS is a landmark day in the proud history of the Connacht Tribune as the paper celebrates the centenary of its foundation.

The first edition of the paper was published exactly 100 years ago tomorrow, on May 22 1909, and our centenary is marked with the publication of a special 136 page supplement, free with today’s Tribune.

We will also mark the exact anniversary tomorrow with a party and live broadcast from our offices on Market Street, hosted by Keith Finnegan of our sister company Galway Bay FM. Invited guests will
include staff, past and present, contributors to today’s supplement and those weekly notes and sports correspondents without whom the Tribune would be a shadow of the newspaper it is today.

RTE Radio’s News at One also comes live from Galway tomorrow and earlier – in Wednesday’s programme – marked the occasion with a special feature on the Connacht Tribune, its past and its
future. It is of course presented by the award-winning Galway-born broadcaster Sean O’Rourke, whose first foray into journalism was in the newsroom of the Connacht Tribune.

And he is one of the many contributors to today’s 136 page commemorative publication that is packed with the stories from those who worked in the Tribune to those who grew up with the paper as an integral part of the weekly cycle in County Galway.
