The Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine has cancelled his plans to visit Galway today.

Minister Simon Coveney will not make his address at the Smart Ocean Conference in Oranmore as he will instead travel to Cork to visit the flood damaged areas.

Record levels of rainfall caused serious flooding in the city and county last week and affected areas include Douglas, Glanmire and Clonakilty.

Officials say the Minister hopes to reschedule the visit if possible which included a visit to the Volvo Ocean race Villiage in South Park this afternoon.

Although the cancellation was last minute CEO of the Marine Insitute Peter Heffernan says they are fully supportive of the Ministers decision to cancel his conference address and go to Cork.
