The Minister for the Marine says the Marine Insitute recognises the very complex issues at a north Connemara bay which has lost its disease free status.

One of 900 oysters tested at Ballinakill Bay, near Letterfrack, tested positive for Ostreid (os-treed) herpes virus in 2011.

The Marine Institue is now hoping to agree a code of practice at the bay which could mean the re-instatement of disease free status in years to come.

The EU supported Irish surveillance programme, started in 2010 with 19 areas, but since then five areas were found to be infected and removed from the programme.

Galway Senator Trevor O’ Clochartaigh raised the matter in the Seanad lthis week.

Responding on behalf of Marine Minister Simon Coveny, Minister Jan O’ Sullivan says the Marine Institute is encouraging a code of practice at Ballinakill Bay.
