The state department on shipping disasters is to launch an investigation into the cargo ship that ran aground in Rossaveal posing a major pollution threat.

The Marine Casualty Investigation board will examine the circumstances of the 7 thousand ton MV ‘Pantanal’ running aground yesterday morning.

The ship was successfully refloated this morning and is currently anchored off Ballyvaughan where the seas are calmer than Costello Bay.

The ship will stay there until a full inspection is carried out by the Marine Casualty investigation board.

Meanwhile, the German firm that owns the boat has sent a representative to Ireland to begin its investigation into the incident.

Minister for the Marine Simon Coveney has visited the scene in Rossaveal and told Galway Bay fm News the incident should never have happened.
