Maree’s league hopes ended in devastating style by DCU
IT was a disappointing weekend for the four Galway sides in the national league, with all of them suffering defeats.
Maree and Moycullen continue to be in a battle with each other to avoid the relegation play-off spot in the Men’s Super League, after Maree lost 100-84 away to champions elect, Tralee Warriors; while Moycullen went down 90-80 away to cup champions, Templeogue of Dublin.
Maree’s hopes of capturing the Women’s Super League title were ended in emphatic fashion in Dublin on Sunday as they fell to a 23-point defeat to DCU Mercy in their top-of-the-table clash, a win which saw the Dublin side crowned champions.
Meanwhile, NUIG Mystics ended their season in the Women’s Division 1 with a 12-point defeat away to Phoenix Rockets, the Belfast side recording a 79-67 win to leave Mystics with a 7-8 record to finish third in the Southern Conference table and outside the play-off spots.
MEN’S SUPER LEAGUE
Tralee Warriors 100
Maree 84
The game was postponed for 24 hours due to the effects of Storm Jorge, which prevented Maree from travelling to Kerry for the scheduled game on Saturday.
Instead, the match was moved to Castleisland Community Centre on Sunday evening, and despite going down to a 16-poiont defeat, there were plenty of positives for Maree.
Tralee were 20-point winners when the sides met in Oranmore back in November, and were expected to bring their own gale-force wind to the game to blow Maree away, but the visitors stayed in touch through the first quarter, with Tralee taking a 23-18 lead at the end of the opening 10 minutes.
