Maree women continue to thrive among game’s elite
THE scene is set for a cracking Women’s Super League in Oranmore on Saturday when last year’s two double-winners go head-to-head in Calasanctius College (7.30pm).
Reigning Super League league and cup champions, Liffey Celtics, head west to take on a Maree side that enjoyed a clean sweep of all five Division 1 competitions last year in what promises to be the game of the weekend in the Women’s Super League.
Maree have enjoyed a dream start to their debut season in the top flight, recording a home win against Glanmire (who finished 5th last season), and then winning on the road on Sunday against another Cork side, Brunell (4th last season).
Celtics suffered an 81-58 defeat at home to DCU on the opening weekend, and they looked to be heading for a second straight defeat when they trailed 70-56 against Killester on Saturday at the end of the third quarter.
However, a stunning fourth quarter display saw them outscore Killester 35-12 to claim a 91-82 win to give them a real confidence shot for their game against an in-form Maree this weekend.
Galway’s two Men’s Super League sides both suffered defeats at the weekend, Moycullen going down 87-64 at home to DCU Saints; while Maree lost 87-84 in overtime away to Killorglin of Kerry. Both sides are on the road this weekend, with Moycullen in Dublin to take on UCD Marian; while Maree are away to Belfast Star. In the Women’s Division 1, NUIG Mystics return from a free weekend to make the short trip to Limerick to take on UL Huskies.
