Date Published: 16-May-2011
The manager of Galway Airport says it will close if it doesn’t get 1.7 million in funding from the government
Transport Minister, Leo Varadkar confirmed last night that the subsidies being sought by the 6 regional airports are greater than his budget allows
It’s understood he will concentrate what funding he has on the more viable airports, Knock, Kerry and Donegal which means Galway, Sligo and Waterford will close
Last Friday, Minister Varadkar met with management at Galway Airport and said there would be no reversal of the decision to cut support
Airport Manager Joe Walsh says there are 60 jobs at stake at the Carnmore facility and approximately 180 ancillary jobs
Mr Walsh says the closure of Galway airport will be a disaster for the region’s commercial life and feels the Departments of Enterprise and Transport and the IDA may intervene
