Date Published: 30-Jul-2007
The motorcyclist who died in last night’s crash in the Ballinasloe area has been named as carpenter Gerry Carty from Sralea
The 36 year old died when his motor cycle lost control and crashed at 11.45pm at Sralea [srah-lay], on the Ballinasloe to Shannonbridge Road
The Garda Ombudsman Commission is involved in the investigation because a Garda patrol car was following Mr Carty at the time of the crash
A statement from the Commission says in an apparent attempt to evade the Gardaí, a member of the public crashed his motorcycle and later died in hospital.
The newly established Garda Ombudsman Commission is also investigating another of the four fatal road crashes which took place in Galway yesterday [sun jul 29]
In Oughterard a car being driven by an off-duty Garda at Glebe shortly before 2am struck pedestrian 53 year old Dave Solman who died from his injuries
Mr Solman was a single man who was originally from Sunderland but had been working at the Connemara Gateway Hotel for the past three years
The Garda Ombudsman Commission, which was set up in May, has to be involved in the investigation into the Ballinasloe and Oughterard crashes because Gardaí were involved in various ways
