A young Waterford man has been seriously injured in a incident in Eyre Square.

The 20 year old man was standing on top of a 10 foot ESB shelter along with another youth in the centre of the square around 3.15 am.

Two more youths, in their early twenties, came along and were involved in an altercation with the two men on top of the shelter.

Gardai say that at some stage during the altercation, the Waterford man was pushed off the shelter and fell to the ground, sustaining serious head injuries.

The two youths then fled the scene in the direction of Shop Street.

The victim was rushed to University Hospital Galway where he’s in a critical but stable condition in the intensive care unit.

The two youths are described as both being approximately 20 years of age.

One man was wearing a black shirt and a grey tie, while the second man was wearing a purple and black shirt and a red tie.

Galway Gardai have launched an investigation into the incident and have sealed off an area in Eyre Square for a forensic examination.

They’re appealing for any witnesses to the incident to contact them on 091 53 8000.
