MAN REMANDED IN CUSTODY OVER CLIFDEN GARDA ASSAULT

An 18 year-old Clifden man has been remanded in custody to appear in court again next week in connection with an assault on a Garda in Clifden.

The incident happened in the town around 8.30pm Sunday, when a Garda on duty was bitten.

The Garda suffered minor injuries.

Gardai arrested the man shortly after 5pm yesterday under section 4 of the criminal Justice Act.

He appeared before Galway District Court today on a number of charges, including assaulting the Garda in Clifden.

He has been remanded in custody to appear before Derrynea Court next Tuesday.

However, during the course of today’s proceedings at Galway courthouse, the accused also bit a Garda Inspector.

Gardaí are now investigating this incident as well.
