Galway Bay fm newsroom – The man at the centre of last night’s incident in Salthill is receiving treatment this morning.

The man in his early 40’s was taken off a rooftop balcony by Gardai following a four-hour operation.

Gardai say that the incident was brought to a safe conclusion with no injuries shortly before 10pm.

The man, who has a County Galway address, went out onto a rooftop balcony at the Radharc an Chláir apartment building- which is opposite the Galway Cultural Institute on Grattan Road in Salthill- at around 5.30 last evening.

He was dressed in black and was holding what looked like a fuel container.

Emergency services, including the Garda armed response unit, arrived at the scene and a fire brigade cherry-picker was raised to the level of the balcony.

Up to 100 people gathered at the scene as the incident unfolded, and the man was heard at times speaking to two fire fighters in the cherry-picker.

The incident came to a safe conclusion shortly before 10pm, when a number of Gardai emerged from an apartment onto the balcony.

They brought the man inside the building, and he was taken to Mill Street Garda station but Gardai say he is not under arrest.

The man has been described by the Gardai as traumatised, and he is receiving treatment
